After the National Cricket League ended, Bangladesh Cricket Board created this new cricket league, named as BPL in 2011. The first season was held during February 2012, and the games were held across Dhaka and Chittagong. Today, the BPL is one of the most watched cricket leagues across the world, with an average attendance (21,824) and over one million ticket sales per season. The BPL is headed by the chairman of the league, elected by the board members of Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Dhaka Dynamites is the most popular team with the most BPL championships. They hold three titles as of 2016-2017 season, including two consecutive titles during the first two seasons of the tournament. The only other team to win a championship is Comilla Victorians. The current champions are the Dhaka Dynamites, who defeated the Rajshahi Kings in BPL IV. The league draws many highly skilled professional cricketers from all over the world, and currently has players from approximately 14 different countries. Bangladeshi constitutes the majority of the players in the league, with an increasing percentage of Pakistani players in recent seasons.

Bangladesh Premier League is considered as an association that is primarily financed by its member teams. This means that the Bangladesh Cricket Board share the income earned with the participating franchises (income earned through television broadcasting rights, licensing agreements, sales of entry tickets, as well as sponsors, etc). BPL has three officers that represent the whole league. This includes the President, Secretary and Chief of treasurer in charge of daily operations. As the parent organisation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board elects and appoints the commissioner of the league, while the president of the board serves as the president of the league committee.
